Single Father Gets Masters Degree

Desmond Durham is a 36-year-old single father from Newark, New Jersey. In the last few days, he’s been all over the news. He and many other Black families are celebrating him earning his Master’s degree. He made this great accomplishment while working three whole jobs to support himself and his nine-year-old son.

Desmond earned a degree in Educational Leadership at the Montclair State University of New Jersey. He was a full-time student and balanced three jobs. He was a teacher for children, a GED instructor, and even a coach for kids’ basketball. Desmond had a word with the news station ABC7, where he stated:

“I never considered myself to be the smartest person but the drive and the determination to keep going… Dedication, hard work, and long days, long nights, it’s the will.”

Desmond has also stated that his endgame is to become a high school principal. He serves as a monumental inspiration for all of us who want to achieve big goals. Life throws everything at us to see how much we can take. It’s about time to show the world what you’re made of. Desmond hopes to be a “reflection and positive light” for his students in Newark. At his graduation, Desmond was surrounded by his loved ones, including his mother and son.

You love to see Black fathers doing everything in their power to create secure and stable lives for their families. Whether they are single or married to a beautiful Black Goddess. It’s important that we support our families to the fullest extent. We’re all we’ve got.
